Sustainable packaging solution made of silphie fibres
Submitted by: GreenCycle Gamma GmbH
This concept includes extracting and processing fibres for paper production from renewable, regionally grown raw materials as an alternative to conventional fresh tree-wood fibres. This will reduce dependence on highly volatile global pulp markets, deforestation of rainforests, as well as transport routes and related CO2 emissions. The marketable fibres and papers based on the silphie plant are further processed together with packaging manufacturers into individual solutions for various applications, especially in direct food contact. Products examples include fruit and vegetable trays, folding boxes, labels, sleeves or bags.
The different uses of the individual silphie plant components creates innovative bio-economic solution approaches for farmers by using residues or fermentation products from biogas plants and enabling multiple material use.
