Curtain up! All about the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation
On November 30, 2022, the European Commission published the proposal for the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). With our comprehensive approach, we will tackle the content of the extensive new regulation. You will get to know what is already set and what is still to be clarified.
12 chapters, 65 articles and 13 annexes, 60 new definitions: On November 30, 2022, the European Commission published the proposal for the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). It is supposed to replace the former Directive (PPWD) and will set a powerful framework for all stakeholders within the packaging business.
Being a regulation and not a directive it will come into force immediately and has not to be transferred to national legislation before.
Is the new PPWR reaching for the stars or digging trenches and building boundaries? Will it help closing the loop or is it just going in circles? What about goals and quota for recycling? Is there certainty necessary for long-term investments?
There are still important gaps that are to be filled with delegated acts in the future. Nonetheless, the PPWR already has the power to build the new landscape for the business of the packaging industry by defining
requirements for waste prevention by banning certain types of packaging,
the use of reusable packaging,
requirements on recycled material that manufacturers must integrate into new plastic packaging,
regulations on bio-based, compostable and biodegradable plastics and
much more besides.
Register now and get insights into the new PPWR: objectives, targets, provisions – and gaps.
