The cushioning material in this award-winning solution was substituted by grain husks as an ecologically sustainable and natural alternative to the well-known and widely used state of the art cushioned packaging. The spelt padding material comes from regional sources of largely unused residues from grain processing, which, with the help of organic binders, means they can be individually shaped in a few simple, resource-saving process steps, withstand impressive mechanical loads and have an insulating effect. The jury was impressed by this innovative solution’s overall sustainable concept, its 100% biodegradability, reduction of CO2 emissions, as well as its particularly light weight – against the backdrop of the continuing strong growth in online retail. The organic and natural look also means end customers can clearly recognise the correct disposal option.
