Top performance! 36 winning innovations at the German Packaging Award 2026

Over 200 companies from 17 countries submitted their innovations to the 2026 German Packaging Award. In the end, the independent expert jury selected 36 outstanding solutions across ten categories. The winners come from Germany, Austria, Italy, the Netherlands and the UK. They use plastic, fibre-based packaging materials, glass and metal. Three trophies went to the packaging machinery category. The German Packaging Institute (dvi), as the organiser of Europe’s largest packaging exhibition, congratulates all the winners and presents the award-winning solutions on its website. The dvi cordially invites you to attend the award ceremony and the announcement of the Gold Awards on 19 November 2026 at a special industry event in Berlin.

What Germany thinks (and knows) about packaging - Packaging Day 2026

Germans expect a lot from their packaging – and, on average, rate its performance as good or very good. To mark the 11th nationwide Packaging Day on 11 June 2026, the German Packaging Institute e. V. (dvi), together with eleven industry associations, published the results of a representative survey from May 2026. The survey focused on 13 expectations that packaging is expected to meet in everyday life. The findings show that a majority of respondents rated packaging as good or very good in nine of these areas. None of the expectations received a poor or very poor rating from a majority of respondents. At a press conference, the associations also highlighted areas where packaging still falls short, the emerging gap between public perceptions and the requirements of the circular economy and environmental protection, and the factors motivating young people to pursue careers in the packaging industry.

The largest European exhibition for packaging cordially invites you to participate: companies, institutions and individuals from home and abroad have until 23 May 2026 to submit their innovations and best solutions for the German Packaging Award. The award, organised by the German Packaging Institute (dvi), is decided by an independent jury of experts across all materials and sectors in ten categories. Load unit securing within the PPWR framework - dvi publishes guidance paper

From 12 August 2026 onwards, the new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will gradually become binding and applicable in all EU member states. Among the new requirements that must be implemented by 2030 are reuse and minimum recycled content quotas for transport packaging, including strapping bands and flexible pallet wraps made of plastic and paper. Since the new regulations raise many questions and create uncertainties in the packaging industry, particularly regarding load unit securing, we have developed a guidance paper on load unit securing. The paper is available in German and English and summarizes the current regulatory requirements, existing challenges, and potential solutions.

Three Gold Awards at the German Packaging Award 2025

Centre stage and well-deserved applause for the very best: The German Packaging Institute (dvi) welcomed around 280 industry guests to celebrate the 37 winners of the 2025 German Packaging Award. The highlight of the event, held on the opening day of FACHPACK in Nuremberg, was the announcement of the Gold Awards, with which the jury additionally honoured three particularly groundbreaking innovations at Europe’s largest packaging showcase.

dvi Packaging Academy launches certified Web-Based Training

As skills shortages intensify and professional standards continue to rise, high-quality education and professional development are becoming increasingly important — for both companies and individual career. In response, the Packaging Academy of the German Packaging Institute (dvi) is expanding its portfolio through a partnership with Clemson University (USA) to offer the modular online programme "Packaging School". This certified web-based training is designed for both newcomers and experienced professionals looking to deepen or expand their expertise. The eleven English-language modules can be booked individually or as a complete programme and offer flexible access in terms of time and location — with savings of up to 25 per cent.

The merry month of innovation! Companies, organisations and individuals from Germany and abroad still have until 31 May 2025 to submit their innovations and best solutions to Europe’s largest showcase for packaging. The German Packaging Award, organised by the German Packaging Institute (dvi), is decided by an independent jury of experts across all materials and sectors in 10 categories. The festive award ceremony takes place as part of a special industry event on the first day of the FACHPACK trade fair in Nuremberg.

New managing director for the German Packaging Institute e.V.

On 1 April 2025, Dr. Natalie Brandenburg will take over as Managing Director of the German Packaging Institute (dvi). The packaging industry network looks forward to welcoming an experienced manager with particular expertise in networking, sustainability, leadership and change management, who will bring together different perspectives from the value chain and create space for the development of innovative approaches.
