First machine-readable packaging system for optimising the entire process chain up to high-quality recycling
Submitted by: Net Brand Discount
Netto Marken-Discount is the first European retailer to equip its own-brand packaging with an “invisible”, machine-readable label integrated into the design and bearing all the required information, with the aim to digitize packaging throughout the entire process from production to recycling. Unlike the familiar barcode, the marking is integrated on all sides of the entire packaging and also includes the code for the red-light scanners at the checkout tills. Since the code is on all sides of the packaging, there is no need to point a coded area towards the scanner, making this process much easier. The invisible code can also automate the packaging process by controlling the machine or logistics. It can provide consumers with extra information and shopping assistance via a smartphone app. One of the great challenges of our time is the conservation of resources and the transition to a recycling economy. Here, too, the coding, which also contains precise information about the packaging material used, can greatly simplify the sorting of packaging from the “yellow bin” – the recyclable packaging material bin –ensuring high-quality recycling and a genuine recycling economy. Netto Marken-Discount has made a major contribution to the digitization of packaging with this step, which can support manufacturers and consumers even more in the future.
